Kinetic Art Show Intrigues Viewers
Contemporary creativity by local artists showcases artwork in motion

Edwin’s Gallery opened its Motion/Sensation Indonesian Kinetic Art Exhibition on Aug. 4 at Grand Indonesia. The exhibit showcased the work of 17 Indonesian artists. There were installations created with wood, steel and other materials and featured the innovative use of audio, video and a variety of objects.
The show, curated by Agung Hujatnikajennong, is among the first exhibits in Indonesia to showcase "kinetic art," or artwork in motion. “We invited more than 30 artists to be a part of this exhibition, but they gave up one by one. They admitted it is hard to explore kinetic art,” Agung said.
Among the works that drew the most attention from guests on opening night was "Autism Spectrum" by artist Bagus Pandega, which comprised a mirror ball, speaker, voice sensor, audio system, turntable, warning lamp, desk lamp and microphone. Speaking into the microphone caused the installation to move and produced music.
“I wanted to create a media that would allow viewers to create their own world. Scream out loud, or maybe dance or do anything by themselves,” said Bagus.
Another piece, "NATO (No Action Talk Only)," by Hardiman Radjab, presented a suitcase as a mouth with teeth and tongue that continually opened and closed.
Guest of honor Soetikno Soedarjo, CEO of MRA Group, which has supported the work of Indonesian artists said, “It’s time for Indonesia to expose our talents and artwork to the world.”
